Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my charger supports fast charging?

Read the small print on the charger. Look for 'PD' (Power Delivery) and a 'PPS' line such as '3.3–11V 3A'. The output lines tell you the voltages and currents it can supply. If it only says 5V 2A, it is a basic charger.

What is USB-PD and PPS?

USB Power Delivery (PD) is the common fast-charging standard for USB-C. PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is an extension that lets the phone ask for the exact voltage and current it wants in small steps. Samsung and Pixel phones use PPS for their fastest speeds.

Will a higher watt charger damage my phone?

No. A good charger only supplies what the phone asks for. A 65W charger on a 25W phone simply charges at 25W. Avoid unbranded chargers with no certification marks.

Why does my phone charge slowly with a fast charger?

Usually one of three things: the charger lacks the standard your phone uses (often PPS), the cable is rated for only 3A, or the phone is hot or above 80% and slows down to protect the battery.

Do I need a special cable?

For up to 60W, any good 3A USB-C cable works. Above 3A (for example Samsung's 45W mode) you need a 5A cable with an e-marker chip, otherwise speed drops.

Why does charging slow down after 80%?

Lithium-ion batteries are charged fast at first, then the phone reduces current near full to protect the battery. The last 20% takes a similar time on any charger.
